The Communication Department faculty have been recognized with several awards, including the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship, Alumni Faculty Appreciation Award, and the Outstanding Registered Student Organization (RSO) Advisor Award. Faculty have won top research and leadership awards from organizations such as National Communication Association and Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
Media production classes are held in the state-of-the-art Integrated Media Center (IMC). At 18,500 square-feet, the IMC may be the most technologically advanced facility of its kind at any Maryland higher education institution. The center features a 3,000 square-foot high definition digital video production studio and a 24-track audio recording studio. These studios are supported by 15 video editing suites and five audio editing suites. Our Journalism Lab features industry standard software including Adobe, Avid and the Associated Press Newsroom. Our Public Relations Classroom is a professional environment built for collaboration and project planning.
Communication Major Concentrations
At SU, students may complete the communication major in one of five unique ways to express their thoughts and views.
The community and professional communication concentration’s focus on organizational, interpersonal and intercultural communication prepares students for careers in human resources, training and development, education, counseling, event planning, government, and health care. Students in this concentration can further tailor their careers to their interests with a minor such as creative arts, business and professional writing, ethnic and intercultural studies, gender studies, and theatre, among others.
The media production concentration prepares students for a wide range of careers in the electronic media industry. Students hone their storytelling skills in classes covering audio production, television studio production, filmmaking, documentary and news production, and graphic animation. Students have access to state-of-theatre equipment to create their own projects or work in production teams to create a film or documentary.
The media studies concentration’s focus on mass communication prepares students for a wide range of careers and graduate study in media management, analysis and creative writing. Students will learn to identify and interpret strategies used by networks and media outlets and write for television, radio and the internet, while understanding the legal and industrial backdrop of the business.
Students in the multimedia journalism concentration are exposed to courses that prepare them for integrated media such as video production, print, social media and the internet. This concentration also addresses professional writing and behaviors in the field. Students in this concentration are prepared for graduate study and careers in newspapers and online publications.
The public relations and strategic communication concentration equips students to meet the demand for public relations professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to write and design messages; develop materials employing a range of print, visual and digital media; and execute campaigns that meet the strategic goals of clients and successfully reach a range of audiences. In addition to core courses emphasizing writing and principles, students complete electives that prepare them for an increasingly integrated and global public relations environment.
Communication, B.A./Public Communication, M.A. Accelerated Master's Program
ÃÛÌÒav offers students the opportunity to earn a combined B.A. in communication and an M.A. in public communication in just five years. Admitted SU undergraduate communication students can adopt the accelerated master’s program as their major once conditional prerequisites are met. Once admitted to the combined B.S./M.A. program, students work concurrently to complete the degrees following the requirements.
